The path passes strictly on dirt paths that can only be traveled on foot or by expert mountain bikers. It follows the path followed by San Vigilio, patron saint of Trento, who was the first in 400 AD to tackle the paths and mountain roads to spread Christianity. San Vigilio, known as San Vili in the Trentino dialect, is a popular saint in these areas and to which the Trentino people are very devoted. Along the path of the saint in his work of evangelization there are dozens and dozens of churches and chapels dedicated to him. The first is the Cathedral of Trento, built on the burial site of San Vigilio. The San Vili path was opened by the Tridentini Alpinists Society (SAT) back in 1998. For convenience and to help the walker, the path has been divided into 6 stages that touch 6 different countries where to stop and sleep. You can think of walking the path even just for some or one of its stages, in fact each one is a complete and satisfying excursion.
